Top 5 Reasons Your Blast Freezer is not Cooling Efficiently

Having a blast freezer can revolutionise how you store products like produce and pharmaceutical samples while maintaining their freshness and integrity. When the blast cooling process appears not to be working effectively, it can be a significant source of frustration. The reason behind the problem can be a simple fix or a sign of a more significant issue that requires professional repair. Cold-Rite install, maintain and repair blast freezers across greater Sydney. Below are some common reasons your blast freezer or chiller may not be working properly.

Improper Seal

Have you noticed droplets of water on the inside of your blast cooling system? This can be a sign that it may need repair because refrigeration components are failing to cool items down efficiently. In other cases, it may be a simple problem with the gaskets that seal the door. Check this rubber sealing around the door. If it visibly doesn’t seal tightly, appears wet or has signs of mould or mildew, improper sealing may be causing the condensation problem.

Refrigerant Leaks

If you’ve skimped on blast chiller price or have an older blast freezer, you may experience problems with refrigerant leaks. This can have a big impact on the cooling function. Signs that the refrigerant is leaking or there is another issue with the system include:

  • System stops freezing items or becomes less efficient
  • Lukewarm air coming out of vents
  • Ice forming on the evaporator coil

Leaking refrigeration equipment runs less efficiently, driving up your costs significantly if unaddressed in addition to stored items degrading from not being cooled properly. Leaks can also emit emissions that may be harmful to your health and the environment.

Defrost System Issues

If you spot ice forming on the door, the evaporator coils, or building up inside the blast freezer, this can be a sign of a problem with the defrost system or evaporator fan motor. This can mean the temperature is not correct inside or that the unit is overloaded and can’t maintain proper airflow. While blast freezers should be freezing, the presence of inconsistent chunks of ice is a bad sign and worth getting checked out.

Dirty Fan

If you notice excessive noise coming from the blast cooling system, it may be a sign of a dirty fan. A dirty fan chugs around rather than spinning smoothly, using a lot more energy to carry out its function. If you’ve checked your fan and it seems clean, another cause of the noise may be issues with the compressor or other components in the system. All refrigeration units make a quiet whirring sound. If you notice a persistent buzzing sound, one of the refrigeration components may need repair.
