Refrigerated Air Conditioning vs. Evaporative Cooling

Cool Room Designs

Keeping your commercial cold room at an adequate temperature for your products is one of your company’s biggest priorities. But should you use refrigerated air or evaporative cooling? Sydney’s leading commercial refrigeration company explains the differences to help you decide.

How They Work

A refrigerated air conditioning system works by taking the warm air in a room and passing it through a set of coils that are filled with refrigerant. It then blows the cool air back into your cold room until it reaches your desired temperature.

An evaporative cooling system uses a fan to draw air in from the outside. The air travels through a set of damp pads causing the water to evaporate and turn to cold air. Then, fans blow the cool air into your commercial cold room.

Maintenance

A refrigerated air conditioning system is robust and durable. You should check the system frequently to ensure there is no frost or leaks. Evaporative cooling systems are simpler than refrigerated air conditioning systems, and you can do most of the repairs yourself. In the case of major repairs for either kind of cooling system, you should call a professional maintenance technician.

Indoor Air Quality

Maintaining a healthy air quality in your commercial cold room is important for the safety of your products. Most commercial cold rooms are designed for food storage, pharmaceutical storage, or medical storage purposes. Therefore, poor air quality poses a health and sanitation hazard.

As long as you change the filters regularly, a refrigerated air conditioning system helps keep the air in your commercial cold room clean. Evaporative coolers bring in air from the outside, introducing dust and allergens to the inside air.

Cost

Since a refrigerated air conditioning system is more complex and efficient than an evaporative cooler, it costs more money to install. However, once your refrigerated air conditioning system is in place, it usually doesn’t need substantial repairs (as long as you stick to a good maintenance routine).

Special Considerations

Another important thing to note about evaporative cooling systems is that they require a connection to the outside air. They are sometimes mounted in windows, walls or on the roof. That being said, most commercial cold rooms require an air-tight seal, so an evaporative cooling system may not be the best choice.
