Is Your Commercial Refrigerator Too Cold?

Commercial refrigerators make up the backbone of several industries. Cool rooms and industrial refrigeration support the logistics and operations of food manufacturing facilities, laboratory environments and critical pharmaceutical applications where even the slightest change in temperature can result in inventory damage and heavy losses.

Cold-Rite has worked extensively with industries to provide them with the perfect cooling solutions for their needs and are well-versed in all things cooling related. Most clients are concerned about their cold storage facility breaking down and causing temperatures to rise, but we often find that excessive cooling is what needs our attention during repair visits. A drop in optimal temperature can results in food products spoiling, but can also permanently damage other components which can be expensive to replace. If your commercial cooling facility is too cold, look for these tell-tale signs that could help identify the problem:

Check for Blocked Air

The key to efficient cooling is to allow the air inside the refrigerator to circulate freely to every component in the cooling chain so they can perform their intended task. To save time and space, some users may overload their refrigerators, causing some products to block the vents through which air should ideally pass. When air flow is reduced, the compressor may not function properly, and the cooling properties of the system could be compromised.

Wrong Settings

More often than not, commercial refrigerators have two main control knobs. One is for the thermostat while a second one controls air flow between sections. A common error is made when the airflow knob is turned all the way to one side, effectively sending all the cold air to one part of the refrigerator while the other part remains warm. When checking the temperature of the fridge using the knob, always ensure that the airflow is being distributed evenly to every part of the unit.

Control Issues

If you find that your fans and settings seem functional but are still causing excessively cold refrigerator environments, it might be time to call for professional help. In such cases, it is likely that there are serious electrical issues which require specialised technical knowledge.

Air Leakage

A well-designed industrial refrigerator is a closed system which does not allow outside air to circulate where it shouldn’t. If there is a sealing issue with the doors, outside air can leak into the unit and cause the components to run ineffectively, causing the temperature to drop dramatically over time. We recommend conducting regular preventative maintenance to keep your door seals in perfect working condition.

Impaired Fan

Sometimes the circulation fan in your commercial refrigeration unit may not be working correctly. This can cause the other components to run without the proper airflow and create extremely cold temperatures which can cause damage.
